Learning how to burn body fat shouldn’t be a painful experience. However, the myths that remain about weight loss and fat burning make it seem like the process is nothing short of torture. Rather than buying into them, it’s important that you learn what’s reality and what isn’t, so you can learn how to make better choices and lose weight that remains off for the long term.

Myth #1: Eating Fat Will Make You Fat

More than likely, the extra fat in your body comes from an excess of sugar. Products containing white flour, as well as those containing sweeteners (even natural sweeteners like fructose or lactose) can lead to weight gain if consumed in excess. So can anything if you’re eating more than you should.

Also keep in mind that it’s not as much where the calories come from that matters, but how much are you’re eating. Eat more than you burn and you will gain weight.

Fats are not only necessary, but some of them are good for you and might even help you lose weight. For example, certain vegetable fats, such as those present in avocado and raw nuts, can help lower cholesterol. Olive and coconut oil are also good for you. Finally, fat is filling, so making it part of your diet means you will end up eating less by the end of the day.

Myth #2: You Can Spot Reduce

No matter how many crunches you do, your stomach won’t get smaller if you don’t lose weight. In short, you can’t spot reduce. Exercises that work a specific part of the body will lead to firmer, stronger muscles, but the area won’t get smaller unless you reduce your overall body fat. In fact, because muscles are located under fat, you won’t even be able to see definition until the numbers in the scale start to drop.

Resistance and weight training are important for weight loss for a number of reasons. For starters, the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even at rest, so it makes sense to try to increase your muscle mass.

Also, the stronger your muscles are, the more you’ll be able to do and the less tired you will become when exercising. You’ll be able to stick to longer routines, thus increasing the fat burning process.

Finally, doing resistance training will ensure that once the fat disappears, you won’t be left with flabby unsightly muscles. So forget spot reducing and instead focus on a rounded workout program that includes cardio and weight training that will help you lose weight and reduce body fat.

Myth #3: You Need to Starve Yourself to Lose Weight

The short answer is “No, You Don’t.” In fact, the less you eat, the less your body will burn because it believes you are at a risk of starving and will conserve as many calories as it can to keep you alive. You can’t explain to your body that you’re overweight and that you won’t starve.

Cut down your calorie intake significantly and you will end up killing your metabolism. Starving your body for a short-period of time (such as in the case of one-week extreme diets) will only result in an increase of body fat in the long run. Instead of depriving yourself of food, switch to healthier foods. Eliminate highly-processed foods and sugary snacks and instead concentrate on protein and natural items such as vegetables and raw nuts.
